Smoke-free Multi-family Housing – Why It's Important

Health effects

Secondhand smoke (SHS) is toxic and there is no safe level of SHS. It is a significant cause of disease (including lung cancer) and early death. Secondhand smoke is also associated with the development of heart disease and respiratory problems in nonsmoking adults. Children are especially vulnerable to the health effects of SHS given their developing bodies and lungs. Children exposed to SHS are at increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory infections, asthma, and ear infections.

Multi-family Housing Residents at Risk
The home is a major source of SHS exposure for both adults and children. Because people spend a considerable amount of time at home, smoke-free (and vape-free) policies in residential settings can significantly reduce exposure to SHS. For residents of multi-family housing (apartment buildings and condominiums), SHS can be a major concern. It can migrate from other units and common areas and travel through doorways, cracks in walls, electrical outlets and ventilation systems. Eliminating indoor smoking and vaping is the only way to protect individuals from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke and vapor aerosol.
