School Lunch Program
School kitchens are permitted by Northern Nevada Public Health, Environmental Health Services which conducts two routine inspections annually. Produce grown in school gardens may be prepared in permitted kitchens for service to the rest of the school community. School staff should work with school administrators to determine proper food service. Other food activities (e.g., Food prepared in CLS, Home Economics or Food Lab classes by students for their own consumption) do not require additional Environmental Health Services permits.
School Gardens
Northern Nevada Public Health does not have regulatory authority over the operation of school gardens, only how the produce is prepared in the school for consumption. The produce can be given away or sold whole to the public, or can be used in school classes with no food preparation involved without additional Environmental Health Services permits for operational requirements.
Safety and maintenance inspections are conducted 2 times annually which include classrooms, labs, shops, utility areas, gyms, hallway and grounds including playgrounds and ball fields. Regulatory requirements for school are listed in NRS 444.335 and NAC 444.568.
